Every sculpture begins life as a drawing on paper. It’s how I work out my ideas.
Based on measurements from the drawings, I build a wooden armature that gives each creature weight, stability, and form.
Next, the armature is covered with blocks of styrofoam and sculpted into shape with a rasp. Sometimes, I leave the antlers and hooves wooden to hint at what’s underneath.
A smooth coating of plaster then multiple layers of torn paper and acrylic paint give the sculpture its texture and color.
It’s when I paint the eyes that the creature reveals its true personality.
